Introduction

The story begins

The story of Bell's® whisky began more than 200 years ago. The place? A wee trading store in Perth, Scotland.

Perth

1825

A Wee shop

Working from his shop in Perth, the owner (Thomas Sandeman) began to trade two of the most valuable commodities of his time: whisky and tea.

Bell's bottle

1837

Enter Arthur

A young man named Arthur J Bell starts working at the store. Shortly after this, Mr Sandeman passes away. In the same year, Arthur begins to dabble in the process of distilling and blending whiskies.

The blending begins

1850s

The blending begins

As time goes by, Arthur began putting his passion to practice. After trialling different combinations, he finds the perfect mix of Scotland's finest whiskies and creates the blend we all know and enjoy today - Bell's® Extra Special Old Scotch Whisky.

A Family company

1895

A Family company

Arthur's two sons, Arthur Kinmond and Robert Duff, join the company. Proud of their new family business, the trading name "Arthur Bell & Sons" is printed on the brand's curling label.

The slogan

1925

The slogan

The famous Bell's® 'Afore ye go' slogan made its debut. We're not quite sure who coined it, but whoever it was, give that man a Bell's®.

From across the sea

1933

From across the sea

After America's state of prohibition, a sudden demand for whisky from across the Atlantic saw Arthur Bell & Sons take on three more distilleries.

A True salute

1975

A True salute

Here at Bell's®, we've always loved a grand celebration. That's why, for our 150th birthday, we created a birthday cake so huge, it took 4 men to carry into the party hall.

UK's Finest

1978

UK's Finest

A proud year for Arthur Bell & Sons and millions of Bell's® drinkers around the world - our whisky is named as the UK's No.1 whisky.

The Arrival of Special Reserve

2003

The Arrival of Special Reserve

We wanted to make a Bell's® blend that our fans could save for those extra special occasions. This year saw the Bell's® Special Reserve Blended Malt bottled and sold for the first time.

Still No. 1

2007

Still No. 1

Another grand achievement, Bell's® Whisky held onto its title as the number 1 Scotch Whisky in the UK.

South Africa's Favourite

2012

South Africa's Favourite

True character is consistent, that's why were were proud when Bell's® retained its position as Best Selling Scotch Whisky in South Africa. A position that we'd held for almost 30 years.

The future

2014

The Reader - Option 1

Bell's® launches its new TV commercial, The Reader. The film tells the tale of a father whose intrepid spirit shows just what it takes to be a true man of character. The commercial went on to win a FAB Award, a Silver African Crystal Award, a Bronze African Crystal Award, Gold, Silver and Grand Prix Pendoring Awards, a Silver Loerie, a Craft Loerie, the 3rd place Creative Circle Ad of the Year Award and an Effective Creativity Award.

The future

The future

The Bell's® mission continues with strength of character at its core. Not only will we hold the craft of whisky-making close to our heart, but we will continue to encourage whisky drinkers to raise a glass and acknowledge the true character they see in those around them.
